The present invention relates to a coated article and methods of depositing a film on a substrate to increase surface integrity for a longer fretting fatigue life. The methods comprise the steps of exposing the substrate to gaseous ions having the same material as the film to be deposited; producing a pressure differential between a gaseous ions source and a deposition chamber, and directing the gaseous ions such that the gaseous ions impinge upon the substrate and thereby deposits the film on the substrate. The present invention also relates to a method of providing high surface integrity to a substrate for a longer fretting fatigue life which comprises the steps of forming a first film on the substrate, and forming a second film on the first film.
