Protect Your Innovative Ideas

Idea is the seed of any great invention. UMCIC will help inventors protect such intellectual property (IP) right. The intellectual property will first be filed in Malaysia (national). Subject to the values and necessities, an invention will either enter into Patent Corporation Treaty (PCT) phase or is filed as an international intellectual property in specific countries.

IP Application Procedure

Step 1

  1. As a researcher, you can easily apply for intellectual property (IP) online via UM Staff Portal.
  2. Click "e-Register" e-Register IPR
  3. Click "New Application" e-Reg_New Application
  4. Fill in the required information in the blank fields (type N/A in non-related fields). Then, upload any supporting documents.
  5. Click "Submit"

Step 2
UMCIC expects to receive the following from you:

  1. IP Form
  2. IP Disclosure Form

UMCIC will notify you about the status of the application from time to time. If you do not hear back from us, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Step 3 & 4
An IP committee panel will be formed for screening purpose. You may be called for presentation and your invention will be evaluated by the committees.
You will be informed about the screening results within 14 days.

Step 5
UMCIC will appoint an IP agent to engage you with regards to IP drafting matters. Typically, the engagement will take up to 6 months. You will receive the following documents from the IP agent:

  1. novelty search report
  2. acknowledgement letter for IP filing
  3. a copy of the intellectual property application issued by Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO)

Step 6
Please ensure your IP agent provides you with the following documents at the end of the engagement:

  1. IP filing number
  2. Certification of Filing and Specification

You will receive IP status updates via e-mail from UMCIC.
