Material Transfer Agreement (MTA)

Definition
Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) is a legally binding contract that regulates the transfer of research materials between two organizations and the recipients of the material involved will utilize it for their own research purposes.


Types of Materials
In the field of research, types of materials that are regularly subjected to the MTA includes:

  • statistical data
  • biological materials (e.g. microbial cultures, cell lines, proteins, transgenic animals and plants)
  • chemical materials (e.g. reagents
  • engineering equipment


Types of Agreement
This type of agreement is classified into two types:

(a) Incoming MTAs

(b) Outgoing MTAs


Period
Agreement period is negotiable between parties involved.
